"SINGING WHEELS" a Documentary film produced by
Roy Fruehauf
Singing Wheels
“Singing Wheels” is a documentary film. It was sponsored by the Motor Truck Committee of Automobile Manufacturers Association and was produced in 1940 with the financial support of Roy Fruehauf of Fruehauf Trailer Company. Mr. Fruehauf was a member of the ATA, American Transportation Association. An ad for the film appeared in Life magazine dated May 19, 1941 and made this observation, “This year, trucks and highways on which they roll assume a new importance in the nation’s No. 1 job—National Defense.” One of the film's goals was to help persuade congress to relax restrictions on highways and roads for truck payloads. Trucks and Trailers paid more than their fair share of taxes as illustrated in the film. A Wilding Production, the film has excellent production values using the Hollywood craftsmen of the day, featuring "truckers" out of central casting complete with lingo of the era: "Height the Bob-tail, Button her up, Put her to bed, Pull Up the Gussie." The film ended up in The Prelinger Collection at the Library of Congress and can be seen on youtube and on this site.
